Chocolate orange quick bread loaf

vegan chocolate orange loafI know not everyone loves chocolate and orange together, but I am a believer. And not just at the holidays either–all the time. I’m generally a fan of adding chocolate to just about anything.

This quick bread loaf is not as decadent as it may appear. Totally plant-based/vegan. A relatively low fat content, yet delightfully rich and dense cake texture. What can I say, except, I ate a 1/3rd of it before it had much of a chance to cool. Recipe after the jump!

When I first sat down to write this recipe, it was primarily because nobody seemed to have quite what I wanted already recorded in the annals of the internet. If you’ve ever had a Jaffa Cake, for example, you’ll know why the majority of recipes I turned up were some variation on that. But I wasn’t looking for a chocolate drizzle, and I wanted something “orange enough”. This is the result:

Chocolate Orange Quick Bread Loaf

Ingredients

1/2 cup dairy-free butter/margarine, softened
1 cup white sugar

6 tbsp applesauce
1 tbsp grated orange zest
1 tbsp boiling water
1/2 cup + 2 tbsp fresh orange juice

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

1 tbsp cocoa powder

Directions

Zest roughly 3 to 4 medium oranges. (It’ll make your life easier later if they’re the navel variety!) Place orange zest and boiling water in a heat safe container and set aside. This will help release the citrus oils and amp up the orange flavour in the cake. Juice your now naked, zest-less oranges and set aside. You’ll likely have more juice than you need if you juice as many oranges as you zested (which I do suggest), so have a cup of fresh orange juice while you bake, why don’t you.

I ended up using about 4 medium sized navel oranges in total.

Preheat oven to 350F and line a standard or 1.5 size loaf pan with parchment paper or grease it with butter.

In a medium sized bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set that aside until you’re ready to add it into your wet mix.

Check to see if your orange zest mixture has cooled a bit, then add it to your orange juice. Add your orange juice and zest mixture to your butter and sugar. Once incorporated, slowly add the dry mix.

Scoop out one cup of batter and put it in a bowl (I just use the bowl the dry mix came from). Pour the remaining batter into your prepared loaf pan. Add cocoa powder to the separated batter and stir to combine. If the mixture seems too thick, add a bit of non-dairy milk–but it should be just fine!

Spoon this reserved batter down the centre of the loaf pan, creating a chocolate “stripe” down the middle of the orange mixture. If you like, take a chopstick and zig zag it across the loaf to create a neat pattern.

Remove from the pan immediately and place on a cooling rack. Store covered at room temperature for 3 to 5 days.

I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for reading.
